About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join this online workshop Playing with Drawing: Marks, Shapes and New Ways to Create Designs with Caroline Homfray.

Do you want to develop your artistic confidence and begin to explore your own creativity through drawing? This two-hour session will introduce you to drawing from the very beginning, and inspire you with confidence to carry on learning to express yourself through drawing.

We will explore two key elements of drawing: how you see and how you interpret your experience. Caroline will lead you through some through some games and experiments which will help you begin to develop your visual language of marks, understand the difference between what what we think we see and what’s there, and ways of seeing as an artist.

On the way we’ll look at design possibilities from our investigations into mark making and shapes. In this workshop you will generate some doodles and markmaking experiments, learn about and start exploring negative space, find new ways to generate designs and experience new ways of seeing.

We will also look at a third key skill: how to encourage yourself to keep drawing and learn more, perhaps the most important skill for anyone wanting to create. There will be further resources and routes to learning recommended.

This ticket is for the live event on 14 May. You will also be given access to the recording once it is available and will be able to view it for at least 6 weeks after the event. If you cannot attend live, register for the On Demand version here where the recording will be available from 28 May.

We are running a number of short workshops and demonstrations which are £2.99 for members and between £10 and £15 for non-members. As well as upcoming events, members can also access recordings of past workshops at a reduced price, to watch at their leisure.

Why not join us to access this discount and other membership discounts too?

You can find details on Guild Membership at embroiderersguild.com/membership

The workshop will be in webinar format (i.e. student video and microphones will be turned off). You will be free to ask questions in the chat and will also have an opportunity to share images of your work on Instagram and Facebook.

Your Tutor

Caroline Homfray is an educator and artist, working with drawing, painting, printing and stitch. With a background in art history and as a maker, she’s driven by curiosity and loves the abundance, oddness and beauty of the natural world and the man-made, exploring it with a playful approach to media.

She’s created murals, made wedding dresses, produced both painted and stitched work to commission (including for V&A Enterprises and the National Trust), and exhibited her paintings, drawings and embroidered jewellery in galleries and exhibitions. Teaching others and reflecting on art and the experience of making in her regular blog is an important part of her practice.

For the Royal School of Needlework, she has taught machine embroidery and tambour, art for the Future Tutors Programme, and since 2020 has further developed a repeating series of popular drawing and design day classes for all embroiderers.
