Egoism and Altruism Workshop @ ACU Melbourne
Sat 29 April 2017, 10:00 – 18:00 AEST
A one-day workshop on Egoism and Altruism @ ACU Melbourne.
Featuring talks by
- Professor Roger Crisp (Oxford)
- Professor Tim Mulgan (Auckland)
- Dr Norva Lo (La Trobe)
- Dr John Thrasher (Monash)
- Dr Tyler Paytas (ACU)
This workshop is on Egoism and Altruism broadly constued. And will be of interest to those interested in normative ethics, social philosophy, and/or the history of moral philosophy generally as well as to those interested in altruism or egoism more specifically.
The papers will be pre-circulated in advance (if you've registered, you will receive the papers a week or so in advance). But the speakers will present for around 30 minutes, before around 30 minutes of Q&A. So the workshop will be valuable for those who have not pre-read the papers.
The workshop will feature talks dealing with the distinction between the self and other, and whether this can or will be diminished in the future; whether we should be moral when morality and self-interest conflict, and if so why; the history of egoism and altruism; and whether altruism can have negative as well as positive consequences.
Lunch and refreshments will be provided. For any questions about the event please contact email@example.com
