Eight New Paintings by Pete Mckee
Event Information
About this Event
*Due to Sheffield’s Tier 3 restrictions announced by the government last week, the city’s museums and galleries will remain closed for the time being. Unfortunately, this means the upcoming Eight Paintings by Pete McKee exhibition will now no longer go ahead. *
Eight New Paintings is the first show to take place since Pete McKee’s 2018 sell-out exhibition This Class Works. The artist is extremely excited to reveal his new body of work, originally intended to be exhibited earlier this year back in March, now rescheduled to be exhibited at Sheffield’s Millennium Gallery from the 9th-13th of December 2020.
The Eight New Paintings exhibition will allow the public to view Pete’s new body of work for the first time, which continues to reflect his interest in exploring working-class life, nostalgia, and social and political themes, in a completely new way.
Each of these new paintings offers a snapshot into the world’s of the characters portrayed. These are scenes and people that most of us recognise, for whom we can easily imagine a backstory. Each painting also comments on or poses questions about the lives of the characters portrayed in these paintings. For example Return of the Waltzer Boy, depicting an ageing fairground worker, invites questions about who this character is, who looks as if he has as many stories to tell as the lines painted in his face.
The time on this ticket is your arrival time - your time looking around the exhibition is not limited, however in any exceptionally busy periods you may be asked to continue moving through the displays. To help us manage numbers safely, please do not arrive at the Millennium Gallery any more than 5 minutes prior to your booking time - early arrivals will be asked to come back for the start of their ticketed slot.
Please book 1 ticket per person including for young children and babies in pushchairs.
Please remember – in line with current Government restrictions, you must not visit with anyone who you do not live with (or have formed a support bubble with) unless exemptions apply. Tickets are capped at 6 people per time slot.
Your ticket includes entry to the rest of the Millennium Gallery. After your visit to Eight New Paintings – Pete Mckee you’ll be able to browse a range of great gift ideas from talented local makers in our popular craft and design selling showcase, Handmade for Christmas. Running from 3 Dec – 28 Feb. the Millennium Gallery’s latest exhibition Not Without My Ghosts – The Artist as Medium brings together work from the 19th century to the present day to explore how artists, including William Blake, Susan Hiller and many more, have been inspired by the practices used by mediums and spiritualists. You’ll also be able to enjoy the city’s Metalwork Collection, displays showcasing the remarkable art and artefacts amassed by the Victorian artist and writer, John Ruskin, and more.
