Event description
An introductory session for researchers to the Institution of Engineering and Technology archives

About this Event

Co-created by the AHRC funded Electrifying Women project (University of Leeds) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), these free sessions aim to introduce researchers to collections held in the IET Archives, with the aim of encouraging further research into the history of women in engineering and technology.

The day will be divided into two sessions (10.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00), which will both include an introduction to the Archives and a workshop using original archives and surrogate copies where necessary. Space for the event has kindly been given by the LSE Women’s Library, another key resource for researching women’s history.

It is possible to book for either the morning or afternoon sessions, or both.

The first session (10.00-12.00) will focus on the professional lives of women in engineering, with a focus on the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) archives:

• Archives of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), founded in 1919 as the world’s first engineering institutions for women engineers. The collection includes corporate records, correspondence, photographs, publications, press cuttings and audio-visual material. The WES Journal has been digitised and is available via https://www.theiet.org/publishing/library-archives/the-iet-archives/the-woman-engineer-journal/.

This event is aimed primarily at postgraduate researchers and early career academics in the areas of 20th century history, gender studies and history of technology. Prior knowledge of engineering and technology is not required. The morning session will be of particular interest to researchers working on women’s work, professional bodies post-WW1, and the changing lives of women post World War One.

If the event is fully booked and you would like to be added to the waiting list please e-mail e.rees@leeds.ac.uk.
