Share Electronics Club in Derby for Beginners

Event Details

This is a weekly two-hour, electronics club for children from the ages of 10 to 16.  It will run on a Saturday from 11.30 to 13.30 and will start immediately after the Python Coding Club has ended.  It is aimed at complete beginners and will enable children to learn how electronics works, by building circuits under the close supervision of skilled adults.  They will learn about the different electronic components, how to solder and use the laboratory / workshop test equipment.

When children are confident with the basics, they will be able to transfer to the more advanced club that will run in parallel, also on a Saturday within the museum.  In the more advanced club, children will work on projects which include Raspberry Pi and Arduino computers.  This means that children who attend the Python code club on a Saturday morning, will be able to stay on for the electronics club, where ultimately they will be able to build circuits which can be driven with software code that they have written.  The whole ethos of these clubs is to demonstrate how electronics and software are closely coupled and using both skills the children will be able to develop real life systems such as rotating the antennas at the museum to track the International Space Station and link with various orbiting satellites.  They will also develop projects using bluetooth and wi-fi not just using the technology but understanding how it is built and how it can be used.  These clubs are intended to be "hands on" and fun.

For those children that wish to develop their skills even further, they can attend the mid week evening training courses to enable them to obtain an amateur radio licence which will allow them to use the radio transmission equipment in the museum.

The first session will be completely free to check that they like it and only if they decided to become a club member and return each week will they need to join and pay a weekly membership fee.

At this stage we would like parents / carers to just register their children's interest by clicking on the green button above and then sending an email to with the child's name, date of birth and the parent's / carers contact information.

NOTE : This club will start on 16th September 2017 and the initial term will run until 16th December 2017, however demand for places is expected to be high and spaces are limited so reserve a place NOW!

Radio Communication Museum of Great Britain

We are a new technology museum being built in Derby which will focus on Radio Communication equipment and software.  Although the museum is not yet open to the public, we are starting to use the museum building for our Code Club activities.

We will be running a range of clubs for both children and adults.  Please look on Eventbrite or our website for more information.

For children we are now running the following "free to attend" code clubs:

  • SCRATCH programming for complete beginners and aimed at children aged 9 to 11
  • PYTHON programming for more advanced coders and aimed at children aged 10 to 16

From September 2017 we plan to also run a range of electronics and science clubs, some for children and some for both children and adults.  These clubs will run on specific weekday evenings and at the weekend.  There will be a club membership fee and a meeting charge to offset the consumable and running costs.

  • Electronics beginner's club, introducing complete beginners to the basics of electronics design and construction aimed at children aged 10 to 16
  • Arduino and Raspberry Pi projects (software and electronics) for the more advanced coders and aimed at children aged 10 to 18
  • Space Science club for both children (aged 14 upwards) and adults.  This will include building electronic and software projects to link up with the International Space Station and orbiting satellites.  A proposed project includes the flight of a high altitude balloon carrying a Raspberry Pi payload with sensors and camera.
  • Amateur radio Foundation licence training and examination
  • Amateur radio Intermediate licence training and examination
  • Amateur radio Advanced licence training and examintion

We have an extensive radio operations room and an ESD protected electronics workshop. Adults and children will be able to become "Friends of the Museum" and make use of the equipment for their personal enjoyment.

If any of these clubs are of interest to you then please visit our website or the appropriate eventbrite page and and register your interest.

If you are visiting our clubs then find the directions below.  At present, because we are located on a newly built industrial park, the post code of DE21 6AS may sometimes take you to a slightly different location !!

We are located just off the old Nottingham Road.  If you find the Pentagon Traffic island on the A52 come round the traffic island past the entrance to Derbyshire Cricket Club and take the next exit (Nottingham Road) signposted Chaddesdon, after a quarter of a mile you will see Hillside Leisure (a large blue building) on your right.  Immediately  after that building, also on your right, is the entrance to Sawley Park. We are the third building (detached) on your right.  We have a large 16 on the building.  Free parking is available in front of and to the side of the building.
