Description

Tim Hill’s, A Joyful Noise - a presentation exploring street band cultures, outdoor music making and celebratory noise

Talk with Tim Hill

Thursday 10th May 2018, 6.30-8pm at Cobden Works, Salford

Tim Hill will present a cornucopia of musical genres across jazz and folk to explore where today’s contemporary street band culture comes from. Exploring the idea of ‘noise’ in outdoor celebration and ritual. And examining the roles and function of street bands in today’s outdoor arts sector.

“Tim is an inspirational gifted musician and energetic band leader who knows viscerally the root and soul of his art, both in its English and World context.”
John Fox, founder Welfare State International

Tim Hill is a musician and artist specialising in outdoor music inspired by encountering and then working for the pioneering arts company Welfare State International, he also researches histories of outdoor ritual and celebration and traditions of street music and outdoor noise. Tim has played with samba bands around Stonehenge and on the back of trucks at Notting Hill carnival, led giants through the streets of London, created Olympic Torch events, cooked celebratory feasts, written wassail songs, and led funeral services, and plays in his band Tongues of Fire.

He works as musical director for many outdoor arts companies, including Cirque Bijou, Liverpool Lantern Company, Macnas and Walk the Plank. He is at present musical director on the Wye Valley River Festival, on ‘Wayfaring’ a project working with AONBs on Chalk landscapes from Dorset to Norfolk and on ‘The Band at the End of the World for Ramshaklicious.
