The Importance of Visual Image in Theatre with Barbara Vijayakumar

Thursday 18th October 2018, 9.45am-4pm at Cobden Works, Salford

An introduction to Kathakali performing skills, characters and how to express emotion through body language. In this intensive one-day course you will explore the spirituality of Kathakali characters through abstract movements, how colour, masks and movement reflect emotion and, finally, how character can enrich the movement and energy of the performer and the performance space.

This workshop is suitable for people who wish to practice both movement and art work. Please note the exercises will be fast moving. Loose comfortable clothing is recommended,


More about Barbara
Barbara Vijayakumar born in Kerala, South India is an outstanding actor, experienced teacher and the leading Kathakali specialist in the UK.

Barbara Vijayakumar is a Kathakali makeup specialist, visual artist and workshop co-ordinator, trained at Rochdale College of Art, Winchester School of Art and the Kerala Kalamandalam,graduating as the first female Kathakali makeup artist in the world. Barbara provides the link between Asian and non-Asian culture and is responsible for the structure of all her workshops.

£40 per person - please select the 'paid' ticket option when booking your place.

There are 8 free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise. Please choose the ‘requested bursary’ ticket option. You will have to submit a case for your bursary when registering. These will then be sent to the Elevate team for assesment.

Who are these workshops and talks for?
The masterclass is designed for North West artists and creatives, especially those interested in outdoor arts practice. This workshop is suitable for people who wish to do both movement and art work.
