About this event

Community • Heritage

Now in its sixth edition, Elevate Symposium returns to its home at The Common Room in Newcastle, following last year’s inspiring gathering at Tales Without Borders in Blyth. Over the years, this event has grown into a trusted platform where people from all walks of life come to reflect, connect and leave energised to create positive change.

This year’s edition, turns the spotlight onto something deeply personal yet frequently misunderstood: Afro hair.

By focusing on Afro hair, its heritage, its beauty and the call to ban hair discrimination, we honour Black history and Black futures alike. We believe that how people choose to wear their hair should never be a barrier to opportunity, dignity or self-expression. This is why we are backing this pettitn to ban hair discrimination in the North East of Engalnd and Cumbria; petition

Guests will step into a vibrant community exhibition showcasing portraits and reflections from local people proudly wearing their natural styles and braids.

What to Expect

  • Throughout the day, free hair braiding stations will be open for adults and children alike - transforming care and creativity into moments of shared celebration and connection.
  • Family-friendly environment – children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.
  • A chance to connect, network, and celebrate the richness of African heritage.
