Event description

Description

WHEN will the gender pay gap in higher education be eradicated?

WHEN will there be an equal representation of women in senior leadership positions?

WHEN will gender equality become a reality?

WHEN exists to speed up gender equality in higher education. Join us for our inaugural conference 'Eliminating the gender pay gap in higher education'. We will be joined by a range of speakers to focus on identifying the actions we can all take that can make the biggest difference to eliminate the pay gap.

Conference format

The conference will amplify the voices of women in higher education. The morning session:

  • will start with a joint keynote ‘painting a picture of women working in higher education’

  • followed by a series of dynamic presentations that provide a clear view of the reality of the gender pay gap

  • ending with a panel discussion, ‘game-changing solutions’ will take place to focus on how to make significant progress and eliminate the gap.

The afternoon session will be split into a series of parallel workshops focusing on both personal development and policy change. All delegates will be invited to attend two workshops.

Workshop topics

  1. Spotlight on action to support BME women: Explore and identify barriers limiting the number of BME women reaching senior leadership and leave with a list of practical action that can be taken to increase awareness and activity to change the status quo.

  2. An exploration of professional identities: Who am I? A scientist? A researcher? A teacher? A professional? A technician? Based on research, and with ample opportunity for discussion and exploration, get to grips with the complexity of identities in higher education and explore links to career pathways.

  3. Policies for progress: Together with Human Resources Directors and Academic experts in gender equality, you will explore limitations of existing policies and seek to identify game-changing policy developments and recommendations for action.

  4. Career development, paths to the top (Academic): A female Vice Chancellor and female Pro Vice-Chancellor share their career stories and top tips for reaching senior leadership with opportunity for open, intimate discussion.

  5. Career development, paths to the top (Professional Services): Female Chief Operating Officer and Female Director of Strategy share their career stories and top tips for reaching senior leadership with opportunity for open, intimate discussion.

  6. Mentoring in action: During this workshop, you will be both mentor and mentee. You will benefit both from receiving and giving an objective view and practical tips for progression.

Context

For the first time, it is a legal requirement that all UK organisations with more than 250 staff publish figures related to gender equality. These include:

  • Gender pay gap (mean and median averages)

  • Gender bonus gap (mean and median averages)

  • Proportion of men and women receiving bonuses

  • Proportion of men and women in each quartile of the organisation’s pay structure

By 4th April 2018, all UK universities and higher education institutions will have submitted their data. This mandate makes way for a consistent data set to monitor progress and therefore a new level of public accountability.

We know there's a gap. This conference will focus on what we can do to close it.
