Join Mandy Haggith and Paul Wood for a very special arboreal evening, discussing their books 'The Lost Elms' & 'Tree Hunting'.
'The Lost Elms' is a love letter to our vanished elms - the story of how we have nearly lost them all, and the long, slow fight back. It tells the gripping story of the scientists desperately trying to halt the disease's relentless progress, and demonstrates the deadly effect globalisation can have on the environment, the threat of climate change, the importance of biosecurity and the intricate ways in which trees are interlinked with other species. Woven throughout is a lyrical look at the elm's central place in our history, culture and folklore.
Brighton & Hove plays a prominent role in 'The Lost Elms', because of the key role the area has played in showing how elm tree protection can work. Brighton & Hove has some of the UK's most magnificent elm trees and one of those is the subject of a lyrical vignette in the book.
Paul Wood's beautiful 'Tree Hunting' is an exploration of some of Britain and Ireland's most charismatic, quirky & spectacular trees. The book features 16 'tree cities' - one of which is Brighton & Hove - each with 20 or more trees of note. Paul says of Brighton & Hove, "With its abundant and varied urban forest, priceless estate of elms and tree-senstive council, this truly is a first rate tree city.
