Event description

Description

We are delighted to host Eloïse Decazes & Eric Chenaux' first ever UK tour together along with Le fruit vert (aka Marie-Douce St-Jacques & Andrea-Jane Cornell) straight after they play Cafe Oto. We are also excited that one of our favourites Collectress will support them with a rare duo set

Eloïse Decazes & Eric Chenaux (three:four records)

"Eloise Chenaux combines folky filigree and wah-pedal squelch and squall to provide a fertile bed." The Quietus

"Chenaux’s guitars bend and warp, sliding, detuning and droning throughout, while Decazes continues to “deroot” vocal traditions, as icily detached as Chenaux’s wah-wah, wobble and fractures are dispassionate in their accompaniment to these songs of unlucky deaths, romantic misfortune and violence." The Wire Magazine

What do we find here? Ten new songs from old times, reimagined from top to bottom, arranged with equal parts madness and precision. One dies always and often in the rolling waves and riptides of these songs without refrain. You can only love furiously and you lose yourself almost everywhere. One hears vicious tales sung in a language characterized by insane turns of phrase. Animals have the word and the forest frightens to death, children make love, and if fathers die by the swords of their sons, it is well deserved. But Eloïse Decazes, more dancer than actress, more visual artist than storyteller, more musician than anything else, does not embellish the literal, never dramatizes her narratives, preferring to blow her melodies like glass or scrub and distill them to limestone and chalk, seeking air in the wooly outlines of verses. Her voice like dawn and her curious formations accompanied by the multiple sonic stances of Chenaux are like myriad flares that inscribe a ballet of shadows and lights in the dark material of the themes, very slow and very beautiful.

Le fruit vert
(three:four records)

Le fruit vert is a bicephalous project led by Andrea-Jane Cornell and Marie-Douce St-Jacques. Portrayed as “priestesses of melancolie” the duo engenders a singular style of music that is perched on the threshold of torpid song, psychedelic refrain and spectral hypnosis. In November 2013, after two years of existence, Le fruit vert released Passiflore, an EP on Montreal imprint Los discos enfantasmes (Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Ben Vida, Greg Davis, Ramzi). Decoder magazine described the cassette as one of the most unusual releases, and easily one of the more interesting debuts. Le fruit vert has been programmed alongside Preterite, Richard Youngs, Circuit des Yeux, Holly Herndon, Eric Chenaux, and Bill Nace, in locales as varied as the Casa del Popolo, Montreal’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and a wild-life preserve in the Mauricie, Quebec. In 2015, choreographer Karine Denault (L’Aune) incorporated several of their compositions in her solo show entitled L’échappée. The discerning ear detects the influences of pioneers Delia Derbyshire and Éliane Radigue in their music.

Collectress (duo set)

Collectress are an autocatalytic set. Having worked together for over 15 years, they both contrast and uncannily auto-complete each others' musical ideas using strings and woodwind, voices, custom software, synths and found sounds. With a collective biography of multi artform collaborations including Bat For Lashes, Evan Parker, GUCCI, Philip Selway (Radiohead), Penguin Café, Rambert and Vagina Dentata Organ, when Collectress perform together, they build fresh, beguiling narratives, drawing listeners in to their distinctive world of wonderful wonky chamber music.

This show is a rare duo version of the collective, featuring Caroline Weeks & Alice Eldridge
