TOUR OF THE LONDON CLOTH COMPANY AT ELVET MILL

WELCOME TO LOOM LAND

Join us for an extensive tour of Elvet Mill, home of the London Cloth Company.

The visit will begin with tea, coffee, and perhaps even a Welsh cake. We will take a walk around the exterior of the building, offering insights into the mill’s architectural evolution since the 1840s.

Then we move inside, for a comprehensive tour of the mill and overly detailed introduction to the weaving process.
We will trace its history from the 1870’s to the present day. You’ll learn about the development of mechanised weaving since its origins in the 1820s and gain an understanding of various types of looms and their technological progression.

We will do as many demonstrations of our working machinery as possible and you will have the opportunity to examine a range of natural yarns and fabrics, including wool, linen, and cotton, and learn about essential techniques such as warp and weft preparation, as well as cloth finishing.

We will also discuss sustainability in the textile industry, delve into the unique history of Elvet Mill, and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

This is an authentic, in-depth experience designed especially for textile enthusiasts.

Every visitor will recieve an embroidered Loom Land Patch and Medal

Plus if you choose to buy a double cloth Welsh blanket in the our shop on site,

you will recieve a discount of £25.

A genuine tour for textiles fanatics.

Important other ther things to note:

  • This is not just a tour, its a intimate yet gruelling extreem textiles endurance test. not for the feignt hearted and certainly not an environment for small or wild children.
  • This is a real working mill, it is not a museum.
  • Please dress appropriately, we encourage flat caps and tweed.
The mill can also be quite cold.
  • It is a REALLY dirty environment to be in, so please be careful. White clothes are just an absolute outright no way.
  • Despite the mill being bloody massive, we are limiting spaces to 8 people per group.
This means we deliver a more personal and safer experience.
  • The advertised time is the start time, so try to arrive a little earlier.
  • The morning tour, gates open at 10am for a 10:30 start, finish by 12:30 pm session closes at 1pm
  • The afternoon tour, gates open at 2pm for a 2:30 start, will finish at 5 and we close down the mill by 5:30pm
  • We should have blankets for sale by July, but due to poor internet we do not have a super reliable card machine that consistently works, but there is post office in the village that has cash.
  • Facilities like toilets are incredibly basic, sorry we are still working on it.
  • Though access & facilities have been greatly improved and will continue to get better.
The ground floor is now fully wheelchair accessable. Please do contact us in advance if you have any questions.

Frequently asked questions

Finding the mill.

Coming from Carmarthen follow google maps to Elvet woollen mill, not the post code. Drive through the village, past the pub, past the shop and follow the road round to the right. We are the track last house/turn on the right. There will be a sign.

Can I get there on public transport?

Yes! and it it remarkably easy. Train to Carmarthen and then the 460 bus to Cynwyl Elfed. If you ask the bus driver where the mill is, they might even drop you at the top of the track. Alternatively get off at the shop and walk the 100m. If you can not find us just ask in the shop.

Parking?

We have parking but we are limited to 7 or 8 cars
