About this event
Welcome to this cosy November life drawing gathering, where we will gather around the firepit to explore the differences and similarities between Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
The first half of the night will focus on Art Nouveau and its romantic approach to nature. The second half will transport you to the impressive symmetric world of Art Deco.
Art Nouveau was born at the intersection of rapidly exploding industrialisation and the push to maintain connection to nature and craftsmanship. New ideas flowed into the Western World, from science to philosophy, with aesthetics being at the centre. New social classes were emerging and with them, the consumption of art shifted. Masterpieces could now be seen in your home instead of just on gallery walls. Visually, we will explore balance without symmetry, exaggerated natural curves and the experiments that set this movement apart from its predecessors.
Art Deco was born of and against Art Nouveau. With its symmetric, simplified shapes, Art Deco challenged what it meant to be influenced by the world and our surroundings. It explored international influences on a much larger and more welcoming scale. Rather than trying to separate art from its classical roots, it welcomed the excitement of the new and expanding world. Probably the more well-known parts of Art Deco are its influence on architecture, music and film. This movement hoped to breathe life into its creations while maintaining a simplified approach. For this part of the night, we will encourage you to think about patterns and how all the small parts of nature can come together to form something grand.
We promise to offer a challenging but supportive space to find your creative flow. It doesn’t matter what skill level you’re at; we will approach this topic with experimentation and freedom, just as they did a century ago!
About the Guest Host:
This event will be co-hosted by Pink Herring Studio, who share Early Masterworks’ passion for art, exploration and community. We are a collective of 3 queer and disabled artists, who are carving out their own space in the London art scene. Everything we make at the studio is a result of our endless interests and innate need to create. Especially as the world seems to get a little darker every year, we want to strongly remind everyone that art and community is the answer. Our art is influenced by the journey we have been on, all of us from East-European countries, we explore our culture and translate our fables to a new audience in England. Our art often explores queer narratives, complicated relationships with body and gender, and the struggle to exist as yourself.
