  • 1 hour

Delve into the compelling narrative of Black history with a special emphasis on the pivotal economic factors that catalyzed the emancipation process. Join genealogy expert and author Paul Crooks, who has spent over 13 years tracing his African lineage. His research led him to a remarkable discovery: his ancestor's liberation from a Jamaican sugar plantation in 1838, a pivotal moment in the journey towards emancipation in the Caribbean. Paul will:

  • Analyze the impact of successful slave uprisings, which influenced the economic and political conversations about slavery among colonial powers.
  • Explore pivotal legislation like the British Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, shedding light on the economic underpinnings of these emancipatory laws.
  • Connect historical insights to contemporary discussions about race, economy, and social justice, especially in the context of Caribbean and African American communities.

About the speaker

Renowned family historian Paul Crooks, a trailblazer in Black genealogy since the 1990s, has made significant strides in connecting present generations with their emancipated forebears. His quest began in London, tracing his lineage through six generations to ancestors once enslaved on a sugar plantation in North America. Against prevailing beliefs, Paul sought the elusive records of slave ownership and the legacy of those who gained freedom, a journey spanning from the heart of London to the shores of North America, and touching back to the Gold Coast.

His seminal works, 'Ancestors' and 'A Tree Without Roots - The Guide To Tracing British, African, and Asian Caribbean Ancestry,' have earned international acclaim, highlighting the rich tapestry of Black ancestry and the triumphant stories of emancipation. His efforts have catalyzed a renewed interest in Black and British roots, and spurred the growth of African Caribbean genealogical research.
