This online course is designed for practitioners with responsibility for leading on English as an Additional Language (EAL) assessment who are looking for effective ways of embedding the assessment of English language proficiency across their school. 


The course explores:

  • Policies and systems: how EAL assessment can be successfully integrated into existing school policies and systems;   
  • Key roles and responsibilities: who is best placed to carry out different aspects of the EAL assessment process; 
  • Continuing professional development (CPD): what CPD is needed for relevant school staff in order to ensure EAL assessment is fully embedded.

  • Heads of department/heads of year;  
  • Higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) with responsibility for EAL assessment.

Course structure:


Module One:

Pre-webinar online tasks: completed at your own pace over a one-week period.

You will:

  • Explore what research and policy say about EAL assessment and reflect on the implications for your context.  
  • Consider key roles and responsibilities of school staff relating to EAL assessment, and reflect on these in relation to your setting. 
  • Consider what constitutes effective EAL assessment practice, who needs to be involved and when it needs to take place. 
  • Learn about initial assessment practices, first/home-language assessment, and ongoing EAL assessment.   

Time commitment: approximately 60 minutes.


Module Two:

Live interactive webinar with the course tutors:

  • Primary: 29 April 2026, 16:00-17:00 
  • Secondary: 30 April 2026, 16:00-17:00 

You will:  

  • Learn about EAL assessment tools and resources.  
  • Explore key steps in the EAL assessment journey of a child. 
  • Consider some strategies for focussing support with limited resource. 

Time commitment: 60 minutes.


Module Three:

Final project to implement learning from the course, completed at your own pace over a one to two-week period, followed by tutor feedback. You will apply what you have learned in Modules 1 and 2 by completing an action plan for your setting.  

Time commitment: approximately 60 minutes.


Course tutors:

All tutors are experienced teacher educators with substantial experience of teaching and assessing learners who use EAL in relevant contexts. Tutors are trained e-moderators and offer friendly, practical specialist support to all participants throughout the course.

Independent UK schools will be charged the standard rate with the income generated enabling The Bell Foundation to further its charitable goals.
