Event description

Description

Looking specifically at individual archetypes we will explore how these universal energies can be expressed in body and voice. The Archetypes I intend to explore will include: The Magician, Warrior, Queen/King, Lover, Crone, Sage, The Trickster, The Golden Child as well as looking at specific Goddess and God archetypes.

We explore the physical, energetic, vocal, vibrational and psychological world of each archetype and discover what we can learn from them: Not only as a palette of colour for our work as artists/actors/singers/performers but also how they can inform and empower us in our lives personally.

What is an archetype?
Archetypes are essential energetic ways of being that are available to us all. Some draw reference from feminine goddesses and some from male gods.. I am interested in exploring how we can relate to all of them as actors/performers/artists. In the archetypal sense. I am interested in the divine essential essence of these qualities, not being feminine, or your idea of what being masculine, is. To be clear it is not about mimicry or showing. It is about embodying these qualities, really like all good acting. It is about being and feeling. So we will embark on a journey exploring the essential qualities of these archetypes. And masculine and feminine is in some ways irrelevant, they both have qualities that are available to us all and we can learn a great deal from all of the,if we explore them with authenticity and from a place of discovery.

“Stereotype is a constrictor or limiter, an archetype is an enabler. A stereotype is smaller than the individual, the archetype is larger” Frankie Armstrong.

Background
My explorations into the world of Archetypes began in 2009 when I explored the Myth of Persephone in a solo show The History of the Pomegranate. I drew upon the maiden, mother Demeter and Crone Hecate as a source of great fuel and learning for creating the show and great healing and maturity for me as a women. I went on to explore 7 of the Goddesses in an all-female show called The Seventh Muse for YMT UK and was blown away by how powerfully the archetypal energies opened up performances possibilities for people not only in creating character, but for accessing a deeper universal truth amongst us as humans and storytellers. Then in 2014 I directed Harvest Fire for YMT with 36 young men and women which explored the power and vulnerability of the Warrior/magician/lover/queen archetypes and was equally inspiring.

DATES
Archetype Workshop I - Sunday October 8th 2017 - 11-5pm

Archetype Workshop II - Sunday November 12th 2017 - 11-5pm

Archetype Workshop III- Sunday December 10th 2017 - 11-5pm

You can attend one, two or all three workshops. Each will be unique and will address a different archetype.

VENUE
FH SPACE, 9 Havelock Walk, Forest Hill, SE23 3HG
2 minutes from the Forest Hill Overground station. But check TFL for travel updates

LUNCH
We will break for lunch and you can either bring something to eat or buy something from one of the local cafes. There is a kitchen with kettle, microwave and fridge in the venue.

PREP
You don't need to prepare anything. In fact it feels better at this stage that I don't reveal in advance what archetype we are working on so you come with fresh eyes and no preconceived ideas about what we will explore. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 14 participants. Wear something you can move in and bring a water bottle.

ON THE DAY
The content of each workshop will include an introductory meet and greet, group warm up vocal and movement exercises followed by a series of specific group explorations adventuring into the world of the Archetypes guided by Lewis. The majority of the work will be as a group, but we may also explore solo and duet work as well. There will be opportunities to write, draw or paint in response. So please bring a pad, pencils, pens, paper and paints ( if painting is your thing). As well as opportunities to give feedback and share what you have discovered.
IF you are working on a monologue you can bring it along, we may or may not use it. Do not worry if you don't have one.
There will be opportunities to apply what we have discovered to the process of creating a character for stage or making a piece of performance as well as how to apply what has been learned to life itself for your general wellbeing.
