Event description
Please join us for a Landsec hosted breakfast event in light of World Green Building Week centred around this year's theme, embodied carbon.

About this Event

World Green Building Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of green buildings as one the most effective means to achieving a range of global goals, such as addressing climate change, creating sustainable and thriving communities, and driving economic growth.

This year’s campaign aims to raise greater awareness of the carbon emissions from all stages of a building’s lifecycle, and therefore encourage new practices and new ways of thinking to work towards reducing carbon emissions from buildings.

To date, the real estate, architecture and construction industries have focused on addressing operational carbon emissions arising from the “in-use” phase of buildings – to heat, power and cool them. Although reducing operational emissions is vital, it leaves aside a key emitter: the carbon impacts related to the manufacturing of products and construction of new buildings, or embodied carbon. These emissions are very significant, in some cases accounting for half of a new building’s whole life carbon footprint.

Tackling embodied carbon in construction is a key challenge that our industry must rise to in order to fully decarbonise the economy by 2050 and keep global warming below 1.5 degrees.

In this breakfast briefing, we’ll address the question of the importance of embodied carbon emissions, understand how they can be reduced through design and specification and how to work with the supply chain to deliver meaningful outcomes.
