Event description

Description

This taster session explores embossing techniques to produce subtle images on paper. The process uses no ink but creates raised and textured areas on paper using a range of different found materials. You will discover how to soak and use a range of papers to create embossed pieces using our traditional etching presses in the workshop.

What experience do I need?

The workshop is suitable for complete beginners in printmaking. For those who have previous experience it will be an interesting way of developing skills and exploring a new technique.

What will I make?

You will produce a unique collection of well-defined permanent relief patterns using natural materials and man-made objects. You’ll come away from the workshop with a series of up to 15 different embossed prints on a range of specialist papers.

Who is my tutor?

Joanna Wilkinson is a practising printmaker, illustrator and bookbinder. She uses printing, collage, analogue/slow photography and sometimes even old style colouring techniques like felt tips in her work. Joanna is currently studying for a MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University and is also a Co-operative Member of Leeds Print Workshop. She has been working with us over the last two years as a technician and tutor for printmaking and bookbinding. She has experience in teaching a wide variety of different groups of people including children and adults.

You can find Joanna on Instagram: @joannawilko

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials and equipment will be provided. This will include a range of different specialist printmaking papers and a selection of materials to emboss with.

If you have other items you’d like to try then please feel free to bring them along. e.g. rice, wool, leaves, rubber bands, lace, ribbon, strings etc.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. By making a booking you are agreeing to our full course terms and conditions which can be found on our website here.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
