Event description

Description

Normalising mental health is another blocker to progressing forward with inclusion; we all have mental health, just as we all have physical health, but often we don't talk about it, or consider what can impact on it, until we face mental health problems either in ourselves, our friends and families, or the people we work with (clients, colleagues).

A combination of over busy, ‘always on’ work cultures and demanding personal lives, coupled with the expectations we place on ourselves, can all too easily overwhelm us. When this happens we get caught in a ‘mental maelstrom’ – where we feel out of control and lose sight of how to improve both our wellbeing and how we perform in our roles.

Building personal resilience is the key here. Resilience is the ability to remain flexible in our thoughts, feelings and behaviours when faced with difficulties and challenges in our lives. This interactive workshop is designed to explore practical ways to develop our ‘resilience muscles’ so we can remain in control of events both at work and in our personal lives.

We will explore how resilience relates to stress and links to our mental health and wellbeing; consider the factors that can impact on our mental health (both positively and negatively) and, most importantly, share practical tips, techniques and strategies to build personal resilience in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes:

  • What resilience is and how it relates to stress and our mental health and wellbeing

  • Appreciation of how stress impacts our performance – both positively and negatively

  • Identification of your personal stress triggers in both your work and home life

  • The six factors that are essential to build our resilience ‘muscles’

  • Mindfulness techniques and other practical tools and strategies to build resilience

  • Exploration of how to create a workplace system that protects mental wellbeing and doesn't burn us out

Your Trainer:

Hilary Lees is a wellbeing expert, public speaker, coach and trainer who formerly spent twenty years working as an occupational therapist in a variety of mental health services. She is on a mission to help people embrace their mental health and understand how to promote and protect it. Her passion for overcoming the stigma related to workplace mental health led to her developing and leading a service supporting people who were recovering from stress, anxiety and depression, alongside educating their line managers and HR in how best to support their colleague's mental health in the workplace.
