Step into Glasgow’s Tenement House and explore women’s history through stitch.

In this free day workshop, you’ll tour the home of Mrs Toward, discovering objects that speak to her life, dressmaking skills, and the stories of tenement living at the Tenement House.

Guided by the Threading Stories Collective, you’ll recreate chosen items in embroidery or using recycled fabrics. Your work will become part of a collaborative textile piece displayed in the Tenement House for our Doors Open Day weekend, celebrating memory, craft, and community.

How it works:

After an introduction to the Tenement House and a self-lead tour of the house join the Threading Stories Collective in creating a collaborative embroidered quilt that celebrates the mission of Tenement House and the message of this year's GDOD - Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future. By using pre-loved materials we recognise the importance of building a sustainable future by honouring materials with a past!

Your work will then be exhibited during the GDOD WEEKEND 20th-21st September where the collaborative quilt will become a record of our individual responses to the collections. Participants will get a certificate of collaboration and a small embroidery kit obtained from predominantly second-hand sources to take home with you.

In a full day workshop 10AM-3PM with a one hour lunch break in the middle (tea and coffee provided), you'll receive an introduction to the house, participate in a self-lead tour, and get to learn creative embroidery techniques to create a quilt with other workshop participants and the Threading Stories Collective.

Threading Stories Collective is a creative art group made of mostly migrant women. Their aims are to share each other's cultures with our community in creative ways, support their community by facilitating artistic workshops, and to celebrate textile work from all over the world.
