Ever-changing demand profiles means that large-scale roster reviews are becoming less relevant and increasingly unlikely to deliver sustained benefits.

We’ll set the scene for the day and cover some of challenges and opportunities a roster review presents. Key themes include supporting employee wellbeing, improving service quality and creating attractive working patterns in support of recruitment and retention.

Insight session: Communications & engagement

Effective communications and engagement are key to roster reviews. Experts will explore how best to secure participation and buy-in for the process, whilst mitigating risk and encouraging a change-ready mindset.

Insight session: Optimised rostering - “the art of the possible”

We'll detail a range of shift design principles, shift patterns and ways of working that have delivered significant benefits in emergency services.

Interactive exercise: Establishing a framework for change

It's crucial clear parameters are in place at the outset of any roster review. This practical session will build your understanding of key areas such as planning, union relationships, core principles, working parties and continuous improvement.

Case study: Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA)

An opportunity to learn how MCA implemented a Demand-Led Rostering system that helps it efficiently meet variations in demand across time frames and diverse geographical operating patches. You will learn how, by modelling demand and designing optimised shift patterns, the organisation was able to manage costs, reduce long shifts, protect vital skills and maintain service levels.

Interactive exercise: Advanced roster design

A practical session that focuses on overcoming shift pattern planning challenges and how technology can be used to support the design process. It will explore the variables you'll need to consider and how to design a roster that meets stipulated requirements.

Case study: London Ambulance Service (LAS)

You'll hear how LAS implemented 200 new frontline rosters across 70 ambulance stations, releasing an additional 3,414 people hours. The session will detail how rationalising rosters and aligning them to demand presented an opportunity to improve the wellbeing and work-life balance of paramedics and other shift workers.
