EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AWARENESS TRAINING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Why attend?

The seminar will introduce attendees to a range of different technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), future networks (IOT) and immersive technology (XR) describing their adoption and impact on the construction industry. Immersive technology (XR) equipment will be available for participants to experience first-hand the implementation of an emerging technology platform.

Who should attend?

Anyone in the construction industry who is interested in emerging technologies and their impact on design, supply chains, business models and customer development / relations.

Content includes:

  • What do we mean by the term ‘emerging technology’?
  • Technology focus: AI, IOT, and XR – definitions and implementation across construction and other industries
  • Current hardware and software platforms
  • Disruptive technology: how is technology changing sectors
  • Case studies: AI, IOT and XR uses in the construction sector
  • Demonstration of immersive technology (XR) equipment to allow participants to experience first-hand the implementation of an emerging technology platform

Speaker Profiles

Nigel McAlpine – Immersive Technology Lead, Digital Catapult Northern Ireland

Nigel is an experienced and innovative digital content producer with a passion for technology. After 20 years at the BBC, leading teams to produce unique digital projects across web, TV and Radio, he set up StoryFX, a creative consultancy bringing stories to life with the latest digital platforms, including Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. His current role with Digital Catapult NI as Immersive Technology Lead means he is engaging with a range of SMEs, industry stakeholders and individuals to highlight the potential of Immersive Technology in driving innovative business opportunities in Northern Ireland, by showcasing the cutting edge technology available at the Digital Catapult Immersive Lab in Belfast.

Adrian Johnston – Director, Digital Catapult NI

Adrian Johnston joined Digital Catapult NI in December 2018 as the Director. He has 20 years industrial experience previously working for Seagate Technology in their Springtown facility in Northern Ireland. His most recent role was as Principal Managing Engineer for Analytics with Seagate Technology. He led a team of engineers based in Springtown, Northern Ireland and Bloomington, Minnesota identifying and implementing Advanced Analytics business solutions. With a PhD in Informatics and AI, he has continued to drive industrially led research in advanced manufacturing with both Ulster University and Queens University Belfast. He was a key contributor to the design of CARL (cognitive analytics research lab) at UU and was a board member of CSIT / ECIT’s industrial panel. Johnston has previously held the role of Chair of Londonderry YMCA from 2006 until 2014 and still remains on the Board as their Community representative. He also continues to advocate for strong community development, youth work and economic regeneration in areas of high social and economic deprivation across Northern Ireland. His research interests focus on disruptive technologies and their application across and in-between industrial sectors. He has a particular focus on AI, machine learning, IoT and data visualisation and contributes to UKRI and Royal Society AI strategy across the UK and Ireland.
