EMILY CARR AND INK: SEA AND SKY
Overview
EMILY CARR: SEA AND SKYSCAPES
LIVE CLASS: WEDS 18TH FEB 2026 @6:30PM UK TIME
All Tickets Include 14 DAYS RECORDING
Taught by Luisa-Maria MacCormack
Led by Luisa-Maria MacCormack, this class will explore the sweeping coastal worlds and atmospheric skyscapes of Emily Carr, one of Canada’s most compelling modernist painters. While Carr is well known for her forest interiors, her paintings of the sea, shoreline, and shifting skies are equally powerful — spacious, rhythmic works that capture the movement of wind, weather, and light across vast open landscapes. Her skies roll and twist with energy; her seascapes feel alive, full of motion and breath.
Together, we’ll look at how Carr translated the drama of the Pacific Northwest coast into bold shapes, dynamic lines, and expressive colour. Students will be encouraged to experiment with approaches that prioritise gesture, atmosphere, and the sensation of space rather than strict realism. We’ll work from a selection of reference images of seas, clouds, waves, and coastal forms, exploring mark-making techniques that evoke motion — from sweeping ink strokes to layered watercolour washes.
This session also reflects Carr’s belief that the natural world was animated by spirit and intensity. We’ll think about not only how a sky or seascape appears, but how it feels: the pull of the tide, the weight of clouds, the rush of wind. Whether you’re interested in landscape drawing, expressive abstraction, or simply taking a creative pause to look outward, this class offers a chance to enter Carr’s world of expansive horizons and come away with drawings full of movement and atmosphere.
