Emotion Regulation for Trauma & PTSD
Sun 14 May 2017, 09:30 – 17:30 BST
One-Day Workshop Emotion Regulation: Imparting Skills to Help with the Treatment of Trauma, PTSD & BPD, (including EMDR Treatment)
About the Course
Safety and Stabilisation techniques are an important part of approaches to treating trauma and PTSD, especially evidence-based approaches (including EMDR). However, as good as one’s Safety and Stabilisation techniques are, there are going to be a group of patients, including those with complex PTSD and BPD, who are likely to require additional Emotion Regulation skills. Without such skills, they are likely to be unable to cope as they work through the trauma process being used.
Lucia Hall (MSc) is a trauma expert who has written and delivered a leading-edge Postgraduate Diploma in Traumatology and PTSD. This workshop on Emotion Regulation is an adjunct to that course, but it can also be taken by experienced counsellors and psychotherapists with an interest in trauma, PTSD, BPD and any many other presenting difficulties including anxiety and depression. Depression may seem a strange choice, but increasing research suggests that an inability to up-regulate emotions is a significant factor in depression. Consequently, emotion dysregulation may be described as:
difficulty or inability in coping with the experience or processing of emotions
An Emotional Regulation skills deficit also tends to be accompanied by a corresponding deficit in interpersonal skills (relationship patterns, assertiveness, boundaries, etc.). The course will look at ways of equipping clients with skills in both of these important areas.
Course participants will be able to:
· Identify basic emotions
· Describe features of the Emotion System
· Describe key features of Emotion Regulation skills and why some clients will require these
· Understand the basic tenets of Emotional Schema Therapy
· Identify the impact of childhood emotional abuse on Emotion Regulation
· Understand the link between lack of Emotion Regulation skills and a corresponding lack of interpersonal skills
· Use an 8-session protocol for client training in Emotional and Interpersonal Regulation (all forms provided, plus a link to download additional copies)
