More than ever we understand that children’s emotional regulation abilities are central to learning, maintaining friendships and well-being. Communication skills are understood to be key to these same areas. Difficulties in emotional development can impact children’s communication skills and vice versa. All adults working with young children and/or their parents can play a major role in supporting children to better understand and manage strong feelings alongside improving their communication skills. This practical course run by a Speech and Language Therapist and a CAMHS practitioner serves as an introduction to this area and will cover:
· reflecting on how we react to strong emotions expressed by young children
· the difference between feelings and behaviours
· ideas to support self-regulation in young children
· specific strategies to support behaviour for children with communication needs
· opportunities to consider how to share your knowledge with parents
