ABOUT JODIE SMITTEN

"I’m Autistic and have attention differences (ADHD) and I’m late discovered.

In fact like many of us I realised I was neurodivergent via my eldest child’s journey of discovery. I was in my 30’s when I realised who I was. And I’ve had a roller coaster journey of unmasking, rediscovery and recovery of myself since, which had led to some big life changes!

I have 3 neurodivergent children of my own. And have worked with neurodivergent children and young people since I was 17 years old.

When I realised my eldest was autistic the curiosity deepened and Autism became even more of a consuming passion and interest.

I started working as an independent autism practitioner in 2016 and since then have achieved my PG Cert & MA in Autism, not because I felt I needed the learning (although I have learnt so so much) but because despite advocating for autistic children to be authentic and accepted I was being gaslit and ignored in professional meetings. I needed backing and confidence in what I was saying.

I now work directly with families via carrying out assessments for educational needs and/or Autism/ADHDdiagnosis as well as mentoring young people (the best bit of my role, but unfortunately I have no capacity for new families at the moment). I develop and deliver training & talks to various groups of parents professionals, schools and organisations and I plan to continue in academic research."
