Description

About the workshop

This masterclass workshop will begin with a short tour of her Emotional Repair exhibtion with artist Ruth Singer.

You will then make your own Precious Objects Sampler full of stories and memories with Ruth, inspired by her exhibition. You will use antique scraps to create an embroidered, patchwork background onto which you can add precious objects, tiny treasures and found natural materials. You will learn a range of hand stitch techniques including wrapping and binding as well as hand embroidery, and can include text and image into your sampler to make it personal. Vintage and antique textiles are provided. Do bring your own treasures and personal scraps along too, to incorporate into your sampler.

Please bring your own basic sewing kit (needles, scissors etc).

The workshop fee includes materials. Lunch and refreshments are not included.

About Ruth Singer

Having started her professional life in museums, Ruth Singer is now a textile artist who finds herself drawn to creating work with a narrative, often based around objects, history, people and places. She works mainly with textile, often old cloth or simple natural materials, and favours traditional hand techniques of appliqué, quilting and embroidery, used in contemporary ways. She often works collaboratively with other artists and makers as well as installations in response to historical materials in archives and museums.

Ruth is showing her exhibtion Emotional Repair in the textile galleries at Gawthorpe Hall from 28 March to 24 June 2018.
