Event description
Academic conference about uni prep and study skills for year 12 and 13 students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds wanting extra support

About this Event

An informal academic conference to help bright year 12 & year 13 students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who feel unsupported and in need of extra support begin the transitional years of their education. 'Empowered' will consist of core talks, work-shops and student panel discussions where topics such as A-levels, personal statements, revision tips and time-management advice will be given.

Help is provided through story-sharing from students of similar backgrounds who are either currently going through the process of university or have successfully graduated.

There is also a skill-sharing element, and various workshops are on offer. The workshops will be paired with either a core talk from an expert in the particular topic or through the ever-popular student panel discussions.

‘Empowered’ student ambassadors will run the workshops which are intended to be interactive and intimate, giving students the opportunity to ask personal and in-depth questions that they perhaps could not during the larger core talks, for example, during the personal statement workshop.

Student Q+A panel discussions are intended to create a wider conversation around the subject topic at hand, giving the students the chance to interact with student ambassadors in a group setting, the aim being a ‘domino effect’ question and answer session. Core talks are mainly non-interactive sessions that allow the students to take notes and simply listen to the advice of a ‘professional’. These allow for the students to gain a different perspective about topics such as Study Skills to help them tackle their work from a strategic and informed way.
