Enabling Gross Motor Physical Development to support early reading, literacy and writing skills


Led by experienced Early Years Teacher Hannah O’Donnell, this NEW Twilight 2hr Early Years CPD workshop for all those working with children under 5, looks at the importance of supporting and developing gross motor physical skills in young children (0-5years) within settings and schools through enhanced child-led play provision, specific interventions and reflexive practice based on the unique child, in order to improve outcomes in early writing development and emergent literacy.

This workshop is a twilight session to allow attendance for all interested Early Years practitioners, students and teachers OOH (as demands for time are great during the working day!),  wishing to address their own CPD in a cost effective way and has been requested within the Newton Abbot region by local practitioners.

It incorporates practical explanation and understanding of recent scientific and educational research into the conclusive postive impact of gross motor physical development in the early years. Significantly, upon effective cognitive skills, (Wassenberg et al, 2005, Gottwald et al, 2016), physical skills,(Veldman et al, 2016), and emotional development as well as later achievement (Stoeger et al, 2013). Most specifically on this course, it will focus on the positive relationship between developing effective Gross Motor Physical skills and greater achievement in the core areas of literacy (Kibbe et al, 2011) and mathematics (Pitchford et al, 2016).

In addition,  the workshop will focus on easy, cost-effective ideas for differentiating physical skill-based continuous provision areas and child-led play practice, in order to provide a solid foundation upon which to improve outcomes for all young children in these major areas of learning and development - literacy and mathematics.

Course Synopsis: What will Early Years practitioners, teachers & those working with 0-5 age group get out of this workshop?

  • A greater understanding of neurological development within young children as they uniquely grow, through simple explanation of processes, which links to the cognitive and emotional learning and life skills processes necessary for then achieving their potential.
  • An in depth look at the key Gross Motor skills necessary for healthy development, which also allow for reading readiness  (tracking, de-coding, sitting with a book etc) and the beginnings of mathematical understanding (ordering, abstract thinking, visuo-spatial awareness etc) within early education.
  • A practical understanding of how core play and sensory provision, in the absence of an adult (as well as adult led interventions and overall pedagogy) can facilitate and differentiate for the development of key gross motor skills necessary for reading and writing, ie: crossing the midline, gaining proprioception, developing bilateral integration, strength and rotation (in the core, arm, shoulder, wrist etc) and effective balance.
  • An understanding of factors negatively affecting this healthy gross motor development (leading to poor development of key skills in literacy and early writing), such as low-risk environments, use of technology, lack of outdoor play/free play, poor attachments, trauma and disruptions in sensory processing, as well as the impact of retained primitive reflexes.
  • An overall, empowered understanding of how to assist the unique child within the core provision set up, as well as through interventions and ongoing reflective practice, based on research-led findings.
  • Full workshop notes, plus electronic copies will be given to attendees for their personal use, as well as key references and suggested reading based on the workshop and a CPD certificate of completion.

Are there ID requirements to enter the event?

For Student tickets purchased at discounted price - a valid NUS card must be shown on the day of the event. Tickets are not required for registration in the day - but if a colleague is coming in your place, please let the organisers know asap in advance of the day where possible.



ALL payments MUST be received prior to the event start date.

Payment can be made online by card OR requested for cheque/ BACS payment (please tick the 'pay by cheque option') and email the organisers at to request your invoice for payment once you have registered for the event online.

Where payment is made for a GROUP BOOKING DISCOUNT (5 delegates for the price or 4) - please notify the organiser of the additional name - as the system won't record this automatically.

Student discount tickets purchsed must be supported by a valid student card - shown to the organiser on the day.

Parking: Free Parking is available on the school site , located at the front of the school.

Should the event cease to go ahead  all attendees will be contacted on the contact details given and tickets will be refunded to the purchaser or an alterantive workshop date offered.

Should you be unable to attend - please notify the organiser, however ALL  tickets are non-refundable.

A replacement attendee is welcome to attend in your place if you are unable to attend on the day - please notify the organiser of their name prior to the event start.

Alternative workshop dates will be offered in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the event organisers and on an individually considered basis.

Empowering Early Years

What is Empowering Early Years?

EEY aims to provide relevant, practical, cost-effective high-quality CPD training in key areas of child development, play based learning and Early Years Education, through in-setting professional training and follow up mentoring/ planning support, as well as workshops for parents and practitioners.

Previous successful workshops which have provided training for over 100 delegates since March 2017 include: Physical development - Gross Motor skills and PSED and pedagogy, as well as SENDCo training and in setting bespoke training.

This course will incorporate recent psychological and scientific, as well as educational research and translate it into easy-to-understand concepts and application into enhanced excellent practice opportunities – positively improving outcomes for all children.

It is run by Early Years Teacher Hannah O’Donnell (EYT, PG Dip – Early Years (Dist), BA (Hons) – Psych), who has worked in a variety of Early Years settings and with practitioners, SENCOs, Teachers and Managers delivering training. Hannah is utterly passionate about play, child development and people, & EEY aims to provide the very best CPD opportunities for those working with young children.
