Event description

Description

1 in 4 women in the UK are affected by violence. In some countries, surveys reveal that up to 70% of women experience physical and/or sexual violence. Forms of violence include child and forced marriage, female genital mutilation, school-based violence, intimate partner violence and rape.

Violence against women and girls is a line that must not be crossed. It is time to #drawaline under violence against women and girls.

As part of UN Women NC UK’s 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women, Action Breaks Silence and Fusion Lifestyle have teamed up to deliver a workshop designed to provide participants with personal safety awareness and physical self-defence skills training. This workshop is intended to empower women here in the UK with very practical advice and teaching of easy to remember and highly effective physical self-defence skills and the same time as raising money to support the work of UN Women NC UK and Action Breaks Silence to end violence at a national level in parts of Asia and Africa, where access to support services are not available. All funds raised by ticket sales will be donated to UN Women NC UK and Action Breaks Silence.

The course is geared to participants who have little or no knowledge of personal safety training or sporting prowess. Open to all participants over 11 years of age, the 3 hour workshop will cover:

  • Building confidence in participants’ capabilities

  • Teaching positive attitude and generating sustainable confidence and empowerment

  • The importance of a mind shift for effective self-defence

  • Psychology of an aggressor or aggressors in a group

  • Understanding the violent mind

  • The impact of pornography on our communities

  • Dispelling the “monster” myth; understanding who the real perpetrators are

  • Introduction to verbal diffusion skills

  • The importance of de-escalation skills in an aggressive situation

  • “Victim” mentality and how to avoid it

  • Information on drug/alcohol assisted rape or sexual assault

  • Identifying target areas

  • Easy to remember and highly effective physical defence options

This is a very empowering course as participants are able to apply their new knowledge in a safe but highly realistic scenario. Every participant will have the chance to practice all the techniques, often more than once.
