Join Enamel Club at Edinburgh Open Workshop for a festive Enamelled Decorations Class! This is the perfect opportunity to unleash your creativity and make some beautiful decorations to cherish or give as gifts. Classes are taught by Elizabeth Jane Campbell - an award-winning enameller - who will guide you through the process, so no experience is necessary. You’ll be introduced to the basics of enamelling, before learning several decorative techniques that can add colour and texture. Each step will be demonstrated, and you’ll get the chance to sample each technique before choosing your final designs for your decorations. All materials are included, and you can create up to 3 unique decorations to take home!

Frequently asked questions

What is enamelling?

Enamelling is a wonderful and ancient jewellery technique that involves fusing finely powdered glass onto a metal surface. Enamels come in a huge range of colours, which can be opaque or transparent, meaning the design possibilities are endless!

Are materials included in the course fee?

The course fee covers all materials and enamels, as well as use of the equipment needed. We will be working on copper blanks, with various enamels. Tutoring and demonstrations will be provided at each stage. If you have any ideas/inspiration, it’s always helpful to bring these.

Is enamelling safe?

Enamel is a finely ground glass, so masks will be provided and must be worn when working with the enamel powders. Health and safety information will be given to ensure safe working. Although the enamels we use are unleaded, we recommend the class is not suitable for under 16s or pregnant women.

What do I need to bring?

If you have any ideas/inspiration, it’s always helpful to bring these. It's important to come wearing appropriate clothing and closed-toe footwear, and a work apron is recommended but not essential. Long hair should be tied back and please bring any glasses needed for close work.

Will there be a lunch break?

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided, and the class will pause for a 45-minute lunch break. Lunch is not provided, but you are welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat in the studio, or you can visit one of the nearby cafés.
