Description

Encoding Inclusion into AI: Fearless Futures x Comuzi

Join us for an introductory workshop to develop a critical framework to understand and challenge asymmetric power, privilege, inequities and systems of oppression, and how they relate to artifical intelligence. By doing so, we believe that you will be able to take meaningful action to interrupt and disrupt the status quo to encode equitable outcomes in your work and be accountable to your users.

What will the programme involve?

A 1 day programme, facilitated by an expert Fearless Futures facilitator, alongside 12-14 technologists and thinkers working on machine learning, AI and/or the ethics and philosophies of these emerging technologies.

Over the course of the programme we will deploy Fearless Futures’ experiential and participatory approach. We will combine this with Comuzi’s design fiction scenario mapping tools to enable you to question how you might influence a better future with artificial intelligence and to transform the way you create for inclusive products, practices and outcomes in your work.

Questions you will explore during the programme:

  • How is your approach to design and creation unintentionally perpetuating inequalities and exclusion?

  • What tools can you grow to challenge deeply embedded exclusionary social systems (racism, heterosexism, ableism, classism) and create transformative alternatives?

  • How might you become cognisant of the privilege you experience so that you can be accountable to your end users?

  • What methods can you use to develop your reflectivity for the impact you and your ideas have on those around you and the wider world?

By the end of the programme you will have a springboard for your own framework that will support you to start to act beyond the status quo. You will find new and transformative ways of enacting and encoding change in your work.

You will also be held to account for your commitments with follow up emails and engagement from Fearless Futures.

Who is this for?

  • Those involved in developing machine learning

  • Technologists eager to encode inclusion to their work

  • UX designers

  • Anyone with an interest in or responsibility for ethics in new technologies

  • Those of all seniorities

Why this, why now?

The unquestionable part AI will play in perpetuating the inequalities we see in our world is an extremely pressing issue for technologists. Whether Microsoft’s Tay, or racist software, we know that the only way to ensure that emerging technologies are anti-racist, anti-sexist, and built to reject oppressive and harmful practices, is to ensure the people creating them are designing these values into our technology.

To do this we need problem solving and creativity that is mindful of the many hidden systems and assumptions that hold change back and maintain the status quo. We need cutting-edge critical thinking. We need to be able to imagine an alternative, more just future; communicate it to our stakeholders from a place of passion and vision; and develop our own skills to build it in everything we do.

In an ever-shifting context, we need to grow our skills and capacities to innovate for real and robust inclusivity within our creations - and in turn, those we engage with outside of them.

There is some urgency across the community to explore ethics in this space, from DeepMind’s Ethics and Society stream to Oxford’s Digital Ethics Lab - this is our public and participatory educational response to engage with this much needed move to action.

Comuzi

Comuzi is a R&D lab. We help our clients answer questions about the future and experiment with emerging technologies with the purpose to build a better world. Our Futures of A.I project provides willing participants to explore scenarios involving Artificial Intelligence in order to address ethical challenges and implications of the future. We will be looking 5-10+ years forward and speculating on how things could be; what future we want to create or not based on these scenarios.

Our learning outcomes:

  • Be able to conduct future-facing design research and ideation;

  • Be able to begin discussions around scenario planning and strategic foresight in regards to Artificial Intelligence;

  • To be more of a ethical doer.

Fearless Futures

Fearless Futures uniquely works to engage people in critical thinking to understand and challenge the root causes of inequalities and to grow powerful new leadership for transformative change.

Our programmes provide participants with a powerful learning opportunity that:

  • Facilitates participants’ critical thinking & learning;

  • Builds a community that is deeply cognisant of inequalities and commonalities among their lived experiences; and

  • Develops the tools to re-imagine power relations, build up collective power and grow leadership for transformation.

This event will be held in a wheelchair accessible space. Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.

But why is this £50??

This is an introduction workshop, an experimentation between Fearless Futures and Comuzi - to work out what happens when we combine our unique approaches in order to multiply impact in this specific area. We are running this at a hugley subsidised rate. If you can affford to pay more (maybe you're from a big organisation with a lovely learning budget) please select to 'Pay What You Can' to contribute over £50.
