Event description

Description

Thank you for expressing an interest in our 5 day summer school course. ‘Encounters with big data: An introduction to using big data in the social sciences’ will be held at the University of Cape Town from Monday 30 January to Friday 3 February, 2017.

As we have limited spaces and are expecting significant interest, we have put in place a selection process to ensure that participants are eligible and sufficiently equipped to attend and contribute to the course.

Please provide us with a few details regarding your background, quantitative methods skills and experience with data management, and why you think you and, where appropriate, your organisation will benefit from attending the course.

Eligibility
In the first instance, only those residing and working or studying in South Africa are eligible to apply and attend. Those residing outside South Africa may be interested and can apply, but not for scholarships.

Course prerequisites
In order to fully participate in this course, we expect those attending to have competency in statistics and data analysis, which we will assess prior to confirmation of a place. Please complete the questions in the application form.

Scholarships

If you wish to apply, please provide confirmation of this by providing photocopies of one of the following documents:

  • South African Passport

A returnable deposit of 500 RAND is required once your application is accepted and to confirm your place. This will be returned only if you are present in the workshop for the full 5 days and complete the syllabus.

Account name: University of Cape Town
Bank Name: Standard Bank of South Africa Limited
Account number: 071503854

A limited number of scholarships for travel and accommodation are available for those who will not be supported by their own organisation.

Procedures
Once eligibility is confirmed, you will be offered a free place and can apply for a limited travel bursary by submitting an estimate of travel costs. Deposits will not be returned where there is non-attendance at the summer school, unless 10 days' notice is given. Logistics about accommodation options and the venue will follow. Recommended reading will follow in the New Year.
