Event description
Encouraging First Time Trustees from diverse backgrounds

About this Event

Part of the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland's #PoweredByPhilanthropy 2019 programme.

The North East needs more trustees especially from diverse backgrounds. The Charity Commission’s ‘Taken on Trust’ report outlined the lack of diversity on charity boards nationally, highlighting that men outnumber women on boards by two to one and that more than 90% of trustees are white, older with above average income and education.

This event will focus on hearing from trustees from BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) backgrounds but is open to anyone from a diverse background interested in becoming a trustee. Volunteering a few days a year to deliver effective trusteeship is a powerful way to support and develop the work of essential organisations making a huge difference to the lives of thousands of people across the North East. Trusteeship is hugely rewarding. As well as the satisfaction that comes from knowing you are part of a healthy and vibrant civil society, you’ll develop new skills, meet amazing new people and be part of interesting events, debates, initiatives and activities.

Whether you are working in the private, public or voluntary sectors, if this is something you are already thinking about or might be interested in, it would be great to see you at this event!

Please note this event is primarily aimed at those from diverse background wanting to become trustees.

If you are are an organisation looking for diverse trustees you are welcome to attend but we reserve the right to offer your place to a potential trustee if the event sells out. We can then speak to you at a later date about trustees.

This event is designed and delivered as part of the BetterGovernance working group which the Community Foundation belongs to and is part of North East Together: Leaders Network for Social Change https://medium.com/northeasttogether
