Description

End of Life Care Experiences for Muslim Patients

Our goal is to inform clinicians of current research that is being developed at the Centre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge, related to end of life care for Muslim communities in the UK. Increased awareness of Muslim end of life care experiences will enable better clinical and pastoral support and decision making for patients and families who are faced with these circumstances.

Greater Manchester Commitments to Palliative Care Individuals Approaching or Within the Last Year of Life

This will be presented by strategic and clinical leads for Greater Manchester, with a view to develop future collaborations that will hopefully increase support and engagement for minority ethnic communities and other groups that have been identified as hard to reach.

Swan End of Life/Bereavement Model of Care & Engagement with Multi-faith Communities

We will facilitate discussions regarding Muslim engagement with available bereavement services across Greater Manchester, specifically through the Swan End of Life/Bereavement Model of Care, looking at how this service engages with multi-faith communities, including Muslim communities.

CLARIFICATION: we are not expecting clinicians to take on the mantle of religious advisors. Both Muslim and non-Muslim clinicians would be understandably wary of this.

We are developing resources for clinicians of all backgrounds that would help them understand cultural and religious factors that may impact a patient’s or carer’s decision-making, particularly when discussing emotive issues like DNAR and advanced care planning. Feedback will be used to inform the on-going research and production of related resources.

NHS England research shows that a focus on minority groups accessing a particular service leads to improvements in that service for the wider community. With this in mind, all of Greater Manchester’s communities will benefit from these conferences and related end of life care outcomes. We hope for participation from clinicians and pastoral professionals of all backgrounds serving the Greater Manchester community.
