End of project celebration: South West
Tue 21 March 2017, 11:00 – 15:00 GMT
The Maintenance Co-ops project is coming to an end shortly and it is time to thank the volunteers who have made this project such a success: the maintenance of 200 places of worship would not be in such good hands without you, the volunteers. We want to show our appreciation by offering South West volunteers an end-of-term treat: a free guided tour, talk and lunch at the church of St Peter & St Paul, Market Place, Blandford Forum from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm on Tuesday 21st March 2017.
The church is "probably the best 18th century church outside London" (Dorset Historic Churches Trust). When the Bastard brothers, John and William, designed and built the new church after a fire in 1731 they intended its tower to have a spire. In the event, a wooden cupola was built. Today that cupola is looking magnificent again and is no longer at risk of crashing through the roof of the nave; the weather-vane, bells and clock have been re-instated and there is new safe access for maintenance. The next phase will complete the roof repair and make the church work better for its community. The project will cost £3 million.
Gather at 11:00 to hear from Sara Loch and Chris Curtis of the Cupola Project how the money was raised to make it all possible. That will be followed by tours of the outside, inside and ringing chamber of this handsome classical church. Lunch is in the nearby Parish Centre at 1:30, followed by a chance to talk to volunteers about their project. End 3:00 pm.
The event is free of charge, and we can pay travel expenses for members of the three South West Co-ops. If you would like us to hire a coach to bring a group, please alert us now: please contact the organiser, Judith Eversley via this website or on 07776 185 668.
