Description

Engaged Heritage Workshop

Developing research approaches within the South West heritage community in collaboration with Higher Education communities

Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter

Tuesday 23 May 2017, 10.00 - 15.30

Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and we are able to reimburse reasonable travel costs for non-University of Exeter attendees.

Event aims

This workshop bridges the gap between organisations in the heritage sector and higher education, with the aim of enabling organisations to shape their next steps towards a deeper relationship.

The one day workshop will explore how the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Cardiff, through their GW4 partnership, can support more profound working relationships and develop shared agendas between researchers and partner organisations in the Heritage sector. This topic emerged from the dialogue between heritage sector and higher education participants who attended the GW4 Bridging the Gaps launch event in January 2017.

Programme

In the morning the workshop will explore our shared understanding of research and what it means for the heritage sector and higher education institutions.

There will be time to share our understanding of the higher education landscape and the ‘business’ of higher education; we will demystify the rhythm of the academic year and how research can take place in different time scales from months to years; we will outline the impact agenda and the ways in which the heritage sector can navigate this; and explore routes to student engagement through module teaching, interns and volunteers.

Short talks and interventions will be offered by heritage sector practitioners who have navigated the issues in their own organisations, alongside briefings and discussions from higher education.

In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to focus on their own organisations agendas, to plot possibilities and to discuss ways to achieve them. This will be a guided process with many opportunities for questions and answers.

We hope that by the end of the day organisations who have been wanting to deepen their relationship with higher education will feel that they have a stronger understanding of how they may achieve this and will have started the process of identifying the opportunities within their own organisations for new higher education partnership.
