ENGAGING ALL PARENTS: OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO RAISE ATTAINMENT

Half-day workshop for senior leaders, governors, teachers, parent support workers and local authority advisers with Fiona Carnie - £120 plus VAT (includes refreshments)

When parents are involved in their children’s education children do better on a range of measures. Yet many schools struggle to engage parents, particularly those they most want to reach.

We know that we cannot get the best outcomes for children and young people without the support and cooperation of their parents. So what more can schools do to ensure that parents share responsibility for their children's well-being and progress?

This workshop will explore the barriers that prevent parental participation and explore strategies for overcoming them. We will discuss how school staff can be encouraged and supported in their efforts to engage parents. It is clear that we cannot just continue to do more of the same. We need imaginative and powerful strategies for bringing about genuine and sustainable change so that schools and parents can work together in an effective partnership.

"Parental involvement is the most powerful school improvement lever that we have" (DCSF Research Report RW004)

The session will cover:

  • Identifying and overcoming barriers

  • Reaching out to all families

  • Supporting staff to engage with parents

  • Reviewing opportunities at transition

  • Improving outcomes for all

  • Evaluating progress

This is an interactive session with opportunities for participants to share ideas and learn from each other. New ideas for engaging parents will be discussed and participants will leave with an action plan for building parent participation at their school.

Fiona Carnie has extensive experience of working with primary and secondary schools to develop strategies to involve parents. She has written widely on this theme, most recently in the Parent Participation Handbook (2011) and Harnessing Parent Power (2013), both published by Optimus.
