Event Details

Wondering how best to recruit volunteers? How to retain volunteers and keep them motivated when abroad? How to manage volunteers working with you in the UK and support those who volunteer overseas?

Building on the success and popularity of the member-led learning set on volunteers that was held in 2011/12, this workshop is intended as a refresher of some of the important points to be aware of when engaging with volunteers. Short presentations will be followed by open discussion and skills-sharing in the group. No preparation is necessary beforehand - just come along to share your experiences, hear about others, and ask any questions that you have! Light refreshments will be available.

Three separate sessions will be led by Alison Walsham, Shiraz Vira, and Janice & Anne from The Humanitarian Centre, on Recruiting Volunteers, Taking Volunteers Overseas, and Working With Volunteers in the UK, respectively. We will round off with an open networking session, with the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Alison, Shiraz, Janice and Anne.

Centre for Global Equality

The Centre for Global Equality focuses the resources available in world centres of excellence such as Cambridge on evolving innovative solutions to global challenges. We contribute to greater global equality by improving access for the underprivileged to the intellectual, social and financial resources usually reserved for the elite.

The Global Challenges Forum is the University of Cambridge research network for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to enhance the contribution of its research towards addressing global challanges. We are a network of over 140 researchers from across the University. Participants come from the physical and biological sciences, engineering and technology, business, law and medicine, and the arts, humanities and social sciences. We collaborate with other networks and groups whose work engages global challenges.

We are a network of NGOs, academics, businesses and individuals who work collaboratively towards reducing extreme inequality, a root cause of poverty and marginalisation globally. Based in Cambridge, we have over 50 member organisations that work on more than 90 projects in 27 countries.
