Event description

Description

People across North West England care deeply about their communities and the wider world but a large majority of people living in the region underestimate the extent to which their fellow citizens care about these things.

Museums can play a role crucial in conveying a more authentic understanding of what people typically value, and working in this way has potentially transformative consequences: people who hold more authentic perspectives on others’ values report deeper connection to their communities, show greater motivation to become civically engaged, are more likely to support action on social or environmental challenges, and have higher wellbeing.

This workshop will equip participants with an understanding of the social science underpinning these insights. We will support participants in developing their own responses to these insights, tailored to the opportunities offered by their organisations. In doing so, we will draw on learning from a project run at Manchester Museum over the last twelve months, which applied these insights to a wide range of initiatives – from changes in volunteer programmes to invitations to donate; from dedicated exhibitions to new social media campaigns.

The workshop will be delivered by:

Shanna Lennon (until recently Common Cause Foundation Co-ordinator, Manchester Museum) and Dr Tom Crompton (Co-Director, Common Cause Foundation).
