Event Information
Description
‘Creating the Cities of Tomorrow’
Wednesday 8 June 2016
Cobalt 23, 5&6 Cobalt Park Way, Cobalt Business Park, NE28 9EJ
-
What kind of place do we want our children to grow up in?
-
What will it be like to live and work there?
-
How do we ensure it is a place we want to live and work in?
As part of the global ENGIE Innovation Week (6-10 June 2016), ENGIE UK is bringing together a major forum in the north east to discuss the city of tomorrow. You are keenly invited to come along to listen to leading speakers in their fields, and take part in expert-led masterclasses to help you develop answers to the profound questions above.
Big data overload
We are bombarded from all sides with what the future holds. On one side, we hear a lot about the possibilities of smart cities, big data, the internet of things. On another, we listen to concerns about privacy breaches, big brother and cyber threats. Among all this chatter, we are showered with messages about climate change, CO2 reduction and green infrastructure. As if this were not enough, we are asked to deal with the challenges of austerity and the need to stimulate economic growth.
How do we make sense of all this and develop a bright future for our cities and citizens?
We will discuss all the burning issues from two different viewpoints:
Viewpoint 1: The Information City of Tomorrow: Citizen, Economy and Government
How we can enable citizens to live happy, healthy and economically independent lives by focusing on the person, not the service, and using new technology to produce outcomes oriented on the individual, through:
-
developing personally owned data
-
empowering self-directed engagement
-
ensuring confidentiality and privacy
Viewpoint 2: The Infrastructure City of Tomorrow: Citizen, Environment and Economy
How we can create the maximum outcomes for the citizen – harnessing the power and potential of data to develop economic growth and stimulate local innovation, while minimising the impacts on the local and global environment, by:
-
employing smart data and innovation to support planning
-
optimising businesses in this new environment, from start-ups to multinationals
-
using 'whole environment' systems to support efficient, low-carbon delivery of city activities
Open debate
We will run a number of open-mic master classes throughout the day, during which you can debate with a panel of experts on all the above themes. We will also be putting on an exhibition and trading floor where stakeholders from across the north east can exchange ideas.
