Engine Shed is running a special day for autistic children and their families, with inclusive activities and a steam train ride.

About this Event

[PLEASE NOTE: The itinerary for this event has changed from the original publicity. Unfortunately it is no longer possible to get to this event by train due to the timing of the Bluebell steam trains, so you will need to travel by car. Please ensure that you get to Sheffield Park station by 9.45am. ]

Engine Shed and the Bluebell Railway would like to invite to you to a very special day for autistic children and their families.

  • We will start the day with a steam train ride to East Grinstead in our own reserved carriage.
  • During the lunch break, you can visit the railway museum and the loco shed
  • After a lunch break, we'll have the Engine Shed's huge Tomy and Brio train sets to build and play with at Sheffield Park station

The event is designed and run by autism professionals, so you can be sure of a relaxing, inclusive and enjoyable day.

Who can come?

Child don't need a formal diagnosis, and the event is suitable for autistic children of any age. Siblings, friends and family are very welcome to come along too.

Children will need to be supervised by an adult at all times.

What's happening on the day?

The activities will be at Sheffield Park station. There is a large free car park at the station. You can get driving directison on Google Maps here: https://goo.gl/maps/uLwKQ4VmdEyngnJv7

Unfortunately it is not possible to come to this event by train, due to the timings of the events.

The Bluebell Railway's facilities - cafe, shop, museum etc - will be open as usual.

Schedule for the day:

9.45am-12pm : Steam train ride from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead and back, in our own reserved carriage.

12-1.30pm: TIme for lunch, and a visit to the railway museum and loco shed.

1.30-3.30pm: The Engine Shed will have its huge Tomy and Brio train sets to build and play with at Sheffield Park station.

Accessibility: Due to the historic buildings and railway carriages at the Bluebell Railway, this event is unfortunately not suitable for people in wheelchairs. However, if they are able to use a stair lift, or able to get in and out of a train, we would be very happy for them to attend.

Social Story

To help with the day, we've put together the following video as a "social story". This was made for last year's event when we did the activities in a different order. This year, we'll be travelling on the steam train first, and then playing with the Engine Shed trains afterwards.

Please watch it yourself and show it to the children who are coming. It includes specific information about what to expect on the day and why. We've used lots of photos of the railway, including all the places we will visit. We hope it helps.
