Engineering Open House Day aims to help children aged 5-13 and their parents/guardians understand what it’s like to work as an engineer or technologist.

Through this ongoing ambition, to inspire the next generation of engineers, we want to raise awareness about the fantastic, creative and exciting careers available in the engineering industry. Engineers bring ideas to life, turn dreams into reality and make solutions to big challenges possible. They design, invent, fix and improve and they are changing our world for the better.

Research tells us that 54% of children don’t know anything about careers in engineering and we’re trying to change that. The variety of careers in modern engineering is vast, yet demand for engineers in the UK far exceeds supply, so we need to encourage young people to feel excited about careers in STEM and nurture their natural curiosity about how the world works and why.

Frequently asked questions

How many parents/guardians can accompany a child??

We advise for up to 2 parents/guardians to accompany a child. Groups of children are encouraged! This is so that we can give as many children the opportunity to attend on the day without going over our max headcount limits.

Is car parking available?

Yes! Two-minute walk from the venue but the car parking spaces are very limited and will be first come-first serve-basis free of charge for the duration of the event. We are working on an alternative parking solution, so please check on this page to see any updates before the event.

Is the venue accessible for wheel-chair users?

Yes! There will be a route sign posted on the day, but please get in contact with us at iet.west.cumbria@sellafieldsites.com to let us know you're coming so we can prepare in advance.

What is the Filming & Photography consent?

On the day of the event media crews will be present taking videos and photos of the event. These will be published on the official websites of the respective companies. Therefore, we require your consent to have on record whether you are happy to be featured.

Will there be a bake sale this year?

Yes, so please bring any spare change to support our charity this year. We will post details of the charity shortly!
