In this session, we will explore:
- retrieval practice as an essential element of pupils' learning
- how to develop retrieval practice as an integral feature of the English curriculum across the phases
- practical ideas for retrieval practice activities that will strengthen pupils' learning of key knowledge and skills and improve automaticity and fluency in their application to reading and writing
Target audience:
English subject leaders, class teachers, senior leaders.
Wider school impact may be gained by several colleagues attending.

This session is part of a series of CPD sessions, aimed at developing effective classroom pedagogies to impact learning and teaching across the strands of Primary English
Taking Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, which many schools have been using to reflect on and develop classroom practice, this series of sessions will consider how each of the principles can be applied to develop effective teaching in the English curriculum to impact pupils’ learning and outcomes.
Participants will:
- develop an understanding of how learners learn and the associated principles for best practice
- explore research-based, effective pedagogies for impactful learning and teaching
- consider how such approaches can be successfully applied to the teaching of Primary English
- acquire practical classroom strategies to impact pupils’ learning in all year groups

English subject leaders, class teachers, teaching assistants, senior leaders.

Session dates and foci:
- Wednesday 29th September - Creating small steps in the English curriculum
- Wednesday 10th November - Modelling and demonstration to enhance learning
- Wednesday 1st December - Scaffolding to support independent learning
- Wednesday 19th January - Questioning to aid learning and assessment
- Wednesday 16th February - Retrieval practice to develop fluency and automaticity
- Wednesday 30th March - Guided and independent practice for application of skills
