Creating spaces to enhance the learning environment

Join Interface for an evening panel debate hosted by Sustainability Manager, Jon Khoo, discussing the latest in design and sustainability in the higher education environment.

Learn from industry experts how universities and colleges can promote student and staff wellbeing, embed sustainable practices and push boundaries in relation to campus development.

The panel debate will be held between 5-6pm.

Host: Jon Khoo: Regional Sustainability Manager (UKIME & Nordics), Interface
Jon Khoo is the Regional Sustainability Manager (UKIME & Nordics) at Interface with a focus on sustainability, inclusive business and intrapreneurship. Following a former career as a city lawyer, Jon joined Interface in 2012 having chosen to reapply his skills to tackle the global challenges of marine plastics, inequality and climate change. Jon works on Interface and the Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) Net-Works™ partnership and is also part of the team responsible for Interface’s membership of NextWave, a collaborative initiative between corporates, scientists, and NGOs to figure out how to integrate ocean-bound plastics into products in a way that is both scalable and sustainable. In March 2018 he was listed by Onalytica at No. #21 in a list of plastic pollution influencers on social media.

Jon also currently serves on the trustee board of UK environmental charity, Surfers Against Sewage.

Expert Speakers:

Oliver Heath: Architectural and Interior Designer
Oliver Heath is an Architectural and Interior Designer and a recognised global expert in Biophilic Design. His work is expressed in number of mediums including the built environment, writing and the media; having worked for a number of television channels including BBC, ITV channel 4 and the National Geographic channel. His last book Urban Eco Chic (Quadrille) sold over 30,000 copies in 6 languages. He has acted as a spokesperson for the likes of the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and is currently a Biophilic Design Ambassador for Interface.

Dr Alex Ryan: Director of Sustainability, University of Gloucestershire
Alex leads sustainability development at the University of Gloucestershire and has overseen its rise to 2nd position in the People and Planet league of all UK universities on sustainability. She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2017 for enhancing student learning in sustainability through innovative teaching practice, across her institution and in the wider sector. Her work includes commissions with agencies and institutions across the UK, as well as international collaboration projects, and she was a member of the expert group that developed guidelines on sustainability education for the Quality Assurance Agency and Higher Education Academy. Alex is a senior manager at the University, responsible for policy and performance in both corporate and academic portfolios, and serves as Director of RCE Severn, its Regional Centre of Expertise in sustainability education, part of the global network acknowledged by the United Nations University. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts with over 12 years teaching experience and has published on various aspects of learning and change for sustainability.

Professor John French: Executive Director – Sustainability Business Hub and Accelerator (BSc -London & PhD – Cantab)
John joined CISL in April 2018 to lead the development of the Accelerator Programme and a platform of development projects. John is building a new team to deliver the accelerator programme which is an international initiative to drive sustainability through entrepreneurship and innovation connecting the Cambridge innovation ecosystem with global change leadership in sustainability.

John is active in sustainable finance and investment, corporate governance, infrastructure projects, risk management and the green built environment. He has a track record in large capital projects with high beneficial impact on carbon reduction and sustainability and is leading a number of major new capital and development projects including the low carbon retrofit of the Institute’s new City Centre Building.

John’s approach is collaborative and multi-disciplinary. The business start-up and SME community is an area of great interest along with the ideation and creation of start-up and spin out businesses. Teaching areas include creative entrepreneurship, enterprise and business creation as well as more established subjects like sustainable built environment. With his track record in this area and his ongoing portfolio of responsibilities at UEA where he created the award winning Enterprise Centre, he is bringing a new dimension to the work of the Institute as it continues to expand.

He is actively involved in the life of Wolfson College and the student and executive communities. He is member of the Institute of Directors, an experienced Director and Non-Executive Director and Trustee supporting a number of organisations and businesses and charities. He is closely involved in the delivery of the new culture district in East London with the London Mayors Office through his role as Innovation Funding Advisor and Chair of the London Fashion Fund.

Outside his academic work John is a member of Rotary International and is Alumni Chair for District 1080 and he is also Chairman of the Sudbury Society.
