Event description

Description

Taking social innovation as its focus, this event will break the usual symposium format – it will be interactive, dynamic and open – and will look at the successes and challenges of social innovation in the 21st century. With speakers from both academia and the wider professional network, expect to be inspired and astonished!

This free symposium is open to all staff and students with an interest in finding out more about this exciting area, and includes all refreshments, lunch and a wine reception.

The afternoon keynote will be given by Matthew Taylor, CEO, Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA)

Think as a system, act as an entrepreneur

Social entrepreneurship offers a dynamic and powerful way of addressing issues in a challenging world; a world where more traditional policy interventions are more likely to fail. The traditional views of the entrepreneur is someone who dreams up ideas and finds a way to commercialise them. Whether or not this is true in the commercial world, social entrepreneurship is, as its name suggests, a socially embedded process. The most impactful social enterprise emerges from a deep understanding of the issue to be addressed and processes of engagement, co-design and co-delivery with those who stand to benefit. Equally, if public agencies want to foster social enterprise they have to remove the barriers which often stand in the way of innovation and experimentation.
