Description

The workshop focuses on the skills development of PDRAs on becoming entrepreneurial researchers. Generating innovation: how to take ideas to business impact. This includes the fundamental concepts of entrepreneurial thinking within research, opportunity evaluation and presenting innovation to ‘investor’ audiences.

Aims

1) to deliver the specific set of skills and knowledge, that is most useful to the PDRA/PhD researchers, rather than a full spectrum business course

2) to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset, and confidence with the language of business

Learning outcomes

a) Ability to evaluate an idea’s innovation potential

b) View the market’s perspective on that innovation

c) Persuade ‘investors’ of its potential

Workshop Programme

The workshop will cover the following topics:

Unit 1: Ideas and Opportunities: Evaluating new technology ventures

  • Where do ideas come from
  • Evaluating the opportunity – technology triage
  • Business models for new technologies
  • Commercialisation paths from research

Researchers often find it challenging to evaluate ideas against market opportunity (technology push rather than market pull). Here we explore commercialisation options from the perspective of the researcher.

Unit 2: The Anatomy of Business:

    • What is a company, what are the relative benefits of the different structures?
    • Legal, tax and people basics
    • International frameworks –variance
    • Internet business models

This section describes international business, eg share capital, business models and global change affecting investment in research-led innovation. We also outline what constitutes a company or partnership, and how they work. This is necessarily a broad-brush look, but highlights the learning objective of learning the language of business.

Unit 3: Protecting Ideas: Intellectual property (IP)

    • What is technology transfer
    • Patent searches and finding ‘novelty’
    • IP strategy

Unit 4: Markets

    • Customer profiling – find practices that use the innovation’s functionality
    • Market research – techniques and source
    • Communicating science to stakeholders

Intellectual property is a cornerstone of technology businesses including, increasingly, software businesses. PDRAs will have the opportunity to explore patent strategy, and how patent protection works in the marketplace. We look here also at establishing a niche and communicating it, and the market research basics to find out more.

Unit 5: Doing Deals

    • Collaboration through joint ventures, licence agreements, and how to structure a deal
    • How to negotiate with multiple stakeholders
    • What is a business plan, how to write the ideal business plan

Early-stage technologies often proceed collaboratively towards the marketplace, particularly those requiring long-term proof of concept and funding. How do researchers judge what is an appropriate ‘deal’ or investment into their innovation?

Unit 6: Raising Finance

    • Who are the investors, private, institutional and government?
    • How to negotiate with multiple stakeholders
    • Financial forecasting
    • Pitching a business idea

An innovation investor could be the EC, a charity, or a private investor. Here we look at how these investors work, what is venture capital, and how can researchers give investors the information they need to persuade them.

Unit 7: Networking and Growth

    • Finding partners, resources and support at start-up stage

Using case studies, we look at networking to support growth. The research shows a clear link between entrepreneurial success and the ability to galvanise others into the new venture. We explore techniques and where to find the right people.
