Environment Talks: How Your Pounds Can Protect Our Planet

Whether you're just beginning your journey into more sustainable living or are ten steps ahead of the masses, one thing that's often ignored is thinking about where our money goes. No, we're not talking about what you buy, but where your money is stored.

The fact is, while we may be trying our hardest to choose sustainable products and reduce our emissions, the majority of our banks are investing BIG money into fossil fuels. Since 2016, 35 of the world’s biggest banks have funnelled over £2 trillion into the fossil fuel industry, with Barclays and HSBC being stamped as some of the biggest UK contributors (Rainforest Alliance Network, 2020). Like our day-to-day banks, our pension providers are also built to invest - and many of them do support unsustainable oil, gas and coal industries. So are you ready to make your money fossil-free?

Henna Shah - Make My Money Matter

Henna is a campaign manager at Make My Money Matter, a new people-powered campaign calling for the trillions of pounds invested in our pensions to build a better world. Their aim is to give people choice and voice when it comes to their money, and make sure that the financial system takes its impact on people and planet seriously. Outside of her day job, she is an anti-racist organiser with #CharitySoWhite and a Labour party activist.

Jen is ordinary, knackered mum of two whose life changed when she dragged and cajoled the family into a year buying nothing new. That year changed not only what she buys, but also how she sees her place in the world. Jen recognised the power that we all have as individuals to make a difference to the things we care about, simply through getting informed about the impact of our daily choices, and figuring out easy swaps and changes. The family are still (just about) talking to her and they live in Wiltshire where Jen writes and podcasts about all things Sustainable(ish). She is the author of The Sustainable(ish) Living Guide.
