Event description

Description

The Government is currently shaping a new Environment Bill, the first in more than twenty years. It will set out a legal framework for the government’s promise to leave the environment in a better state over the next 25 years.

Wildlife populations around the world are being decimated. And it starts right here at home –since 1970, 56% of species in the UK have declined and we’re one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world; ranking only 189th out of 218 in the global league table for nature.

We also need strong environmental legislation to fight inequality. Issues like air pollution disproportionally affect low income communities, disabled people and children, who have often contributed relatively little to creating the problem.

York St. John Students’ Union are hosting the York City Environmental Act Panel and we invite members of the York community and YSJ students and staff to engage with leading figures in the fight for our planet. Local MPs, representatives from the council and key individuals from WWF and The Wildlife Trust will be starting this extremely important dialogue.
