Event description

Description

The discourse of ‘environmental crisis’ has permeated public discourse to unprecedented levels over the last year. The strong evidence of human generated environmental degradation has moved from a niche concern of climate scientists and activists to a widespread public issue. The evidence makes clear that the harmful consequences of the range of environmental shifts disproportionately impact on those who are socially and economically disadvantaged. Environmental justice is therefore inextricably aligned to social justice.

Social justice is a key theme in social work practice and education, it therefore calls for a response from social work scholars, practitioners and policy makers. There is a growing range of social work scholarship from field of international social work as well as North America and Australia. Social work in the UK has however been slow to respond to this issue, begging the question, does environmental degradation and its associated issues really matter for social work?

This 'open space' event will bring together practitioners and policy makers to explore this question and identify key issues as well as opportunities to develop practice and research. Brief provocations from environmental scientists, social work researchers, policy makers and practitioners will inform discussion. The themes and issues which emerge from this event will inform research and further development.

This event will have relevance to people working across social work and social care at all levels; you may work in an area where environment and environmental issues are significant or you may have an interest in how your practice may be more meaningfully informed by contemporary environmental concerns.

Practitioners will receive a CPD certificate for their attendance and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Parking is very limited on campus. Concert Square car park is across the road next to Buchanan Bus station and the campus is only a few minutes walk from the bus station. Queen Street Train Station, Central Station and Cowcaddens or Buchanan Street underground are all within 10 minutes walk of GCU campus.

The workshop room (the old John Smith's bookshop) is in the Centre for Executive Education (building number 7 on the campus map) on Cowcaddens Road at the ARC entrance to campus. Enter via the door from campus next to the Learning Cafe. If you have any additional requirements or dietary needs, please email Susan Grant Susan.Grant@gcu.ac.uk in advance of the workshop and please contact Dr Heather Lynch if you have any questions about the workshop Heather.lynch@gcu.ac.uk
